Four Weeks to Go

The countdown to the 2014 BMO Vancouver Marathon is on and I’ve decided to blog a bit more in the last four weeks before the race. Today marks four weeks until race day.

I’m at the point in my training where I’m ready to be done. I’ve logged a ton of miles since February including five runs over 25km in the last six weeks and 353km in the past seven weeks.

Another long Sunday – 28km

Today I ran 28km including the last 7km solo. The first part was run with Alice, Sean and Ryan. They were only in for 23km today and made the turn back to the store about 20.5km into the run. That left me to continue on and find another seven or eight kilometres to hit my distance for the day.

I ran along Queen’s Quay for a bit, then through Confederation Park over to the entrance to the CNE. From there I decided to head back along Fleet St., and up Dan Leckie way to run through CityPlace. I’ve never run through this newer neighbourhood in Toronto, so it was nice to have some different scenery to look at.

That part of the city has a real Vancouver feel to it as the developer is the same company that built many of the condos in the False Creek area of Vancity.

From there I ran down past the Rogers Centre where the crowd was already gathering for today’s Blue Jays game. By the time I got back to the store I’d logged 28km. It was a kilometre shorter than what I had on the schedule, but I was happy with the effort after a hard run Around the Bay last weekend.

The GPS track was a mess thanks to the underpasses on Yonge and Simcoe. When I mapped it out manually it was 28km.

Positives from the run today:

  • I ran the last 7km about 15 seconds faster per kilometre than the first 21km. My legs were tired, but I still kept up a strong pace right to the end.
  • I ran on two gels and still had energy at the end. I hadn’t planned to go easy on the gels, but I forgot my wallet and only had two gels for the run.
  • The weather was beautiful. Spring is finally here and while I still pulled on the tights for today’s run, the sun was shining and it was clear that shorts running weather isn’t far off.

The best part of the run today was knowing that there’s just one more 32km run to do before the taper begins. The super long Sunday runs are almost done! After that it’s a 23km, then 16km and holy crap…it’s race day already.

Can’t wait!
