Summer and Long-term Plans

Despite what my training might suggest, I’m not planning to run a fall marathon this year.

So far in July I’ve logged over 165km and I’ll likely get close to 180km before the month comes to a close next week. While I am running five days a week, I’m not planning to continue to run the Sunday distances that the marathon training schedule calls for.

I’m continuing to push my training through the summer and into the fall in an effort to stay strong heading into the winter. My hope is that I can hit the ground running in January with a very strong base. The goal will be to further improve my marathon time next spring with an eye towards a Boston Marathon qualifying time attempt in 2017.

It seems crazy to be even saying that, or to be planning out that far into the future, but the reality is that running a sub-3:25 marathon will require a lot of work. That’s as big an improvement to my current time as I made last year to this year. I know full well that going from 3:48 to 3:36 is one thing, going from 3:36 to 3:25 will be even tougher.

In the meantime, I’m enjoying the running this summer and heading towards a yearly mileage total of well over 2,000km.
