2016 Recap and 2017 Plans

With just a few days left in 2016, it’s a good time for a traditional look back at another year of running and also to look forward to 2017.

Some Nerdy Stats

This year I ran more kilometres than I’ve ever done in a year before. I hit my annual goal of 2,016km in mid-October and with that goal reached so early in the year, I decided to re-evaluate. After some calculations and thinking about what I wanted to do with the last two months, I set my sights on 2,400km which I hit a couple of days ago.

Averaging 200km per month was a big achievement for me. In the past, a 200km month was something I managed a few times a year. To average that over 12 months (with some ups and downs) was super nice.

I ran 228 times in 2016. That’s about 4.3 runs per week and about 10.6km per run. During marathon training I ran five days a week, and away from that it was usually four days a week so that number is a good reflection of how the year played out.

Distance-wise, I ran a lot of 6km runs, but with lots of runs in the 25-36km range thanks to a couple of marathon training cycles, that average gets bumped up a bit.

I had 21 runs over 21.1km and 13 runs over 25km. Both totals include the two marathons and the Around the Bay Road Race.

Personal Bests and Not-So-Great Marathons

My fastest overall pace on a run this year came during the Tannenbaum 10km. I averaged 4:22/km over the 10km of that race, on my way to a new personal best. I ran one other race PB this year, in Hamilton during the Around the Bay Road Race. 2:26:55 was my fastest 30km ever and also my fastest AtB.

The marathon wasn’t as kind to me in 2016. Despite some great training, I didn’t get the result I was after in either of my two races. Both featured warm, humid weather that isn’t conducive to fast times. I don’t run especially well in the heat and in both Ottawa and Toronto, the second halves of the races were a struggle.

I was a part of Team Awesome for the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend for the second time in 2016. That was again a great experience, and it was super cool to have the entire family in Ottawa this year. Also neat was that Lindsey ran her first 10km. Ginny also ran the 10km, while Mackenzie took on the 5km walk.

Running Elsewhere

I didn’t travel as much this year as I have in past years, so running was limited to just five or six cities in 2016. I ran in Toronto, just north of Charlotte, NC, Hilton Head Island, SC, Hamilton, Ottawa and up in Huntsville, Ontario.

In addition to the Ottawa Marathon and Friendship Run, a short work trip to Ottawa for a weekend in June meant a couple of nice training runs in the Nation’s Capital and over to Gatineau, QC.

Looking forward to 2017

I’m guessing that I won’t run quite as much in 2017 as I did in 2016. Two marathons in one year is just a bit too much. I haven’t run a fast half marathon in a while, so I plan to run the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon in October.

While I do enjoy racing in Hamilton at the Around the Bay Road Race, I’ll probably take a pass on that one in 2017. It’s a great race and a good course, but the drive out to Hamilton is a pain and the race comes just a week after our annual trip to South Carolina.

That leaves the marathon. I’ve run at least one every year since 2010, and 2017 will be no different. As of today, I’ve registered for the BMO Vancouver Marathon on May 7, 2017. This will be my fourth BMO Vancouver Marathon and I’m super excited to head back to my favourite city to run my favourite race.
