I spent the last few days buying a bunch of new running gear in an attempt to get faster and become a better runner by looking the part.
I jokingly said to a running buddy that fast runners always look good and have all the fancy clothes and stuff and that’s why they are fast. I was actually only half joking – I think there’s something to the whole idea that if you look the part, it rubs off in the form of confidence that will make you faster.
Here’s what I picked up:
- OS1st CS6 Performance Calf Sleeves – you want to look fast? Wear calf sleeves. I picked up a pair of black ones to start, but added a light grey pair as well once I was confident in the sizing. High socks would also work, but I’ve always liked compression on my calves and sleeves let me stick with my favourite socks.
- Wrightsock Coolmesh II Socks – I’ve always worn Wrightsocks and they’ve worked well for me over the years. I ordered a couple of pairs of black quarter heights to go with my black calf sleeves. This should result in a sleek and fast look and they’ll go nice with my grey New Balance shoes.
- Lululemon Pace Breaker Shorts – for years I’ve had these crappy Nike shorts I got at the outlet in Hilton Head Island. They are in the trash as of this week and I’m instead wearing these sweet shorts from Lululemon that fit nice and feel fast. I’m especially excited for the Variegated Mesh Camo Black pair.
- New Balance Compression Arm Sleeves – I like a nice pair of arm warmers for the cooler days when a short sleeve isn’t quite warm enough but a long sleeve is overkill. These do offer compression, but not a ton. They’re black with a reflective NB logo to show off the brand just like a sponsored pro runner.
My first few runs in some of this stuff have been great. I feel like a better runner and that’s upped my confidence. Maybe it’s all in my head, but whatever. If gearing up like a sub-3:00 marathoner helps me run even a little bit better, it’s worth it.
Look good to feel good and run strong.
